Why should you support your breastfeeding employees?
Today is World Day for Safety and Health at Work Day. Breastfeeding is often overlooked by employers as an issue for their staff. If you are an employer what do you think the needs are of the breastfeeding employee?
Do you know your obligations?
Would you think to incentivise and support your employees to continue to breastfeeding on their return to work?
Do you have a Breastfeeding Policy?
The main legislation in the UK that supports the breastfeeding mother is the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and the Equality Act 2010. Her health needs and those of her baby are to be protected by ensuring she is able to express her breastmilk or breastfeed to prevent mastitis and avoid exposure to certain substances or materials that could affect the integrity of her breastmilk. However supporting your employees goes beyond this. Every breastfeeding mother/parent may have differing needs. Some may only need to be accommodated for a few weeks after their re
turn and others for a year or more. In the United States a study companies who supported breastfeeding realised a retention rate of 94% amongst their female staff.
#KeepingMum® bespoke serivces look at your business, the workplaces you have, the roles your breastfeeding staff may be working in and how you can accommodate them. As an IBCLC, midwife and working mother I can bring professional and personal insight to this consultancy service. By supporting breastfeeding and being a breastfeeding friendly company you could reduce your staff turnover, sick leave and ultimately your #genderpaygap.
We deliver workshop to your line managers in how to have those awkward conversations around pregnancy and breastfeeding, how to strategise for family and how to implement incentives to support your pregnant and breastfeeding employees to ensure you ret
ain your talent. There is a Policy service where we can audit existing policies and guidelines and or develop new versions. This year we are excited about introducing MumPods® pop up areas or stand alone Pods for your breastfeeding or new mothers to rest, express or breastfeed. As part of the MumPod® offer
ing we have teamed up with @Ardo Medical to produce Maternity Leave Gifts Boxes which include a double top grade breast pump and Return to Work Gifts boxes
that include a cool bag, ice blocks and milk storage pots. Finally as the initiative is to support the health and wellbeing of your staff we have working parents support networks hosted by a panel of experts in Infant Feeding and Midwifery, nutrition, empowerment, coaching, fitness, yoga, pilates and flexible working.
